Recent developments in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict show complex and increasingly intensive dynamics. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, and since then, fighting has continued in various regions, especially in the Donbas and southern regions of Ukraine. At the same time, international support for Ukraine remains strong, with a number of Western countries sending military and humanitarian aid. Since early 2023, there have been a number of large-scale attacks by Russia, targeting Ukraine’s critical energy infrastructure. This attack was intended to weaken Ukraine’s ability to resist invasion, but instead increased Kyiv’s resolve to defend itself. Ukraine, under the leadership of President Volodymyr Zelensky, continues to launch counteroffensive in the occupied areas, gaining significant success on several fronts. July and August 2023 marked an increase in the scale of attacks and raids by Ukraine, especially in regions such as Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. This Ukraine-led operation involves intelligence cooperation and modern military technology from NATO countries. Ukraine has also become more adept at using drone technology to target Russian troop positions and infrastructure. On the other hand, Russia also responded by strengthening its defenses in the occupied territories. The deployment of reserve troops and the use of new weapons became a strategy in responding to the Ukrainian attack. Russia also attempted to increase propaganda by accusing Ukraine of provocation, although many analyzes show that Russian aggression was the main trigger for this conflict. There is also an interesting diplomatic aspect in which several countries, including China, have offered to mediate in this conflict. However, diplomacy may reach a dead end due to fundamental differences between the goals and interests of both parties. The economies of Russia and Ukraine were significantly affected. International sanctions against Russia continue, with many countries isolating their economies. Despite this, Russia is trying to find alternative markets, especially in Asia, to export oil and gas. Meanwhile, Ukraine faces major economic challenges, with much of its infrastructure destroyed by the war. Political developments within the two countries also play a role in determining the direction of the conflict. In Ukraine, support for Zelensky remains high, and the government continues to seek increased mobilization of the armed forces. In Russia, there are signs of dissatisfaction among the people with the government’s decisions, despite the Kremlin’s efforts to control the media narrative. The sustainability of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict depends largely on the ability of both sides to maintain their resolve and resources. This war is not just about territory, but also about national identity, and potential shifts in geopolitical power in Europe and in the world. With the situation still changing rapidly, the world continues to pay attention to further developments in efforts to resolve this conflict.
